Small Scooters

Small scooters are light and easy to transport, they usually dismantle to allow you to stow them in a car boot. Although some parts can still be heavy for some users, so always check that the primary user or carer are physically able to dismantle and lift all parts. Small scooters also have smaller batteries so have less travel time/distance between charging, and due to their light frames have a smaller limit for passenger weight.

Key points:
small, compact and lightweight
dismantle to smaller size
smaller passenger weight capacity (approximately 135 kg/21 stone)
less travel time/distance (approximately 10 miles)
small design allows greater access (can be used around the home)
not suitable for road use

Medium Scooters

Medium scooters (Class 2 and Class 3) are heavier and harder to transport, they usually require a ramp or lift to transport in a vehicle although some models do dismantle or fold. There are many scooter models/options available and many options for access and storage in vehicles. Medium scooters also have larger batteries so can travel for longer time/distance between charging, and due to their stronger frames have a larger limit for passenger weight. The Class 3 scooter can be used on the road if taxed.

Key points:
strong and durable
larger passenger weight capacity (approximately 135-150 kg/21-25 stone)
larger travel time/distance (approximately 20 miles)
less manoeuvrable in small areas (not suitable around home)
can travel long distances
travel speeds up to 6 mph
Class 3 scooters are suitable for road use (when taxed)

Large Scooters

Large scooters are heavy and not usually suitable for transport in a vehicle. They are mainly used as a road legal scooter and can be used on the roads (8 mph) and pavements (4 mph) and can handle difficult and rough surfaces. Large scooters have large batteries so have a greater travel time/distance between charging, and due to their robust frames they have a larger limit for passenger weight. Large scooters due to their size usually require a separate safe and secure location to store them.
As Class 3 road legal scooters they require to be taxed by the DVLA (this is provided free of charge).

Key points:
strong and durable
difficult to transport in a vehicle
larger passenger weight capacity (approximately 250 kg/30 stone)
larger travel time/distance (approximately 20-30 miles)
less manoeuvrable in small areas (not suitable around home)
can travel very long distances
suitable for difficult and rough surfaces
travel speeds up to 8 mph
have lights, indicators and a horn
Class 3 scooters are suitable for road use and require to be taxed
